Proxy Video Editing / Bait-n-Switch Video Editing Method

Posted on 12/22/2007 2:37:00 AM

What can you do if you want to edit video on a low power laptop, so you can edit video by sitting in Starbucks like thousands of those losers?!? hehe

I did not invent this method but I have been editing this way since Premiere 4.2. Just would like to share my experience.

When I first work on a project, I will batch transcode those huge source files to a low quality version (proxy files) with a fast codec. Then load those LQ AVI files to my laptop and then edit rough cuts (now I can work on my laptop all day in Starbucks just like those really cool hip people.

After I am done with the rough cut, I will create a new Premiere project in the desktop computer and import the rough cut project to it. At open, Premiere will prompt me to locate all the AVI files. Then I will point it to the original high quality version of the same file. Now I can finalize the project with the high quality video preview and export final videos.

Since I'm editing the LQ version of the video, I don't need to use a super fast laptop. Also, the LQ video file size is like 1/4 of the original size (about 35MB-40MB instead of 1.3GB) so they are more portable this way.

  • Tools to batch transcode : After Effect, VirtualDub, Procoder, Super.
  • Proxy file codec: Microsoft Video1, Cinepak, Indeo
  • Frame size: 320x240 (you set it to 1.2 PAR or 1.33 PAR in Premiere later on)
  • Proxy file audio: 16bit 22khz stereo
