Shotgun Mic 360 Degree Rotation

How to make your shotgun mic rotate in 360 degree to pick up sound from different sound source direction

I always run into this problem. When I am shooting at a event, in order to pick up better sound, I will be using a shotgun mic that pick up sound from one direction, that my cameras are setup pointing at the loud speakers. However, there're times the person talking will be running around the location that I need to turn the camera around to get the visual. At the same time, the shotgun mic not be pointing at the speakers and the sound recorded will become muffled. Now I have a solution.

Instead of mounting the microphone on the camera shoe, I have it mounted on the Rycote Extension Bar. The bar double nuts design allow me to pivot to the shoe. Now I can get my shotgun mic rotate to whatever degree I need. Problem solved!

Replied by LA Color Shop That's the Rode NTG-2 mic which can be connected through XLR or 3.5mm jack. It was connected to the Canon HV30 with 3.5mm input jack.
Posted by scott on 10/4/2009 2:18:00 AM first of all, thank you for the quick reply, but when i look at the rode NTG-2 mic its looks like a XLR plug. So from the XLR plug that coems from the mic how do you conncect it to a 1/8 plug.

2. what is the L flash brackt you use for the light?

Replied by LA Color Shop NTG-2 can be connected either XLR or 3.5mm plug. If you are connecting with 3.5mm, you will need to suplly a AA battery.

1. Do you like the audio you get out of the mic?
2. is it better than the canon d-50 hot shoe one?
3. which light is the one in the pic?

Replied by LA Color Shop If you need both XLR and 3.5mm flexibility, NTG-2 is a good choice. However, if you need only 3.5mm connection, RODE VideoMic is a great choice as it's cheaper too.
